Twitter is testing out a new feature to deliver proximity-based alerts to users. TechCrunch reported a similar “trending box” for TV programs yesterday, and additionally discovered such a format used to notify people of events happening near their locations.
TechCrunch also reports that when Twitter was inquired about this new service, they declined to comment and directed TechCrunch to a blog post titled “Innovate through experimentation.”
Twitter’s vision is to be the dominant platform of providing users with information regarding real-time information and alerts. In a time where unnecessary and noisy information is rampant in the internet stratosphere, Twitter aims to use location-specific filtering in order to be more effective and useful.
