Would You Play This Unpaid “Producer’s Party” In Front of MTV Executives?

Last month, we asked musicians whether they’d play an unpaid gig attended by more than 1,000 people, to celebrate the opening of a restaurant in Santa Monica, CA.  The answer, according to our information, was resoundingly yes: the owners were flooded with submissions from quality groups.

So, here’s another one.  It’s a “Producer’s Party” happening in downtown Los Angeles at the distinctive Salvage Bar & Lounge.  MTV executives and influential producers will be there; but would you play it for free?

The craigslist post is here; we tried to submit but got a bounce because it was expired.

Based on the fact it was put on Craigslist, they used ‘2’ instead of ‘to,’ and their excessive use of exclamation points, chances are the MTV people that will be there are not executives and the producers that will be there are not influential.

Agreed. Way to source a “news” article from Craigslist…

On a different note – there’s nothing wrong with playing for free if the publicity benefits are significant enough. A-list artists do this all the time.

If you’re referring to A-listers who do high-profile benefits, like the Sandy concert, then that diminishes what one would hope is their real motivation. Otherwise, that’s just plain wrong.

I suspect that the add was pulled because the people paying for the party did not like seeing an ad on craigslist for an open cattle call for any dumbass band to play for free at their party. I know if I hired a party planner/organizer and the entertainmanet they provided was acquired through a free ad listing on craigslist I would be pissed.

Anyway if you want to know my thoughts about playing free gigs just refer to the comments from the previous similar story here on DMN

Are you telling me that a bunch of producers are so poor they can’t pay a decent fee for a good band to entertain them?

No wonder the live music scene is in such a state!
