Topspin may have gotten more attention, but Bandcamp has gotten more money. As part of its five-year birthday celebration, Bandcamp has revealed $50 million in artist payments.
Even better, Bandcamp predicts that this figure will double in 18 months.
A good thing could be moving into overdrive: five days ago, the site launched a new iOS and Android app. The app isn’t for searching Bandcamp’s library of 8.4 million tracks, rather its purpose is to give fans access to the music they have already purchased (free downloads don’t count). Fans who have purchased music from Bandcamp can create a fan account and log into the app, which allows streaming and downloading of purchases.
The app also gives access to a weekly podcast called Bandcamp Weekly. The latest edition features a mix by THEESatisfaction and an interview with Shigeto.
Beyond all of that, Bandcamp will soon add a new music feed feature to the app. This will let users
stalk follow artists and other users’ activities and purchases.
