Not exactly the first person that comes to mind for “inciting hate”…
Bob Dylan has been charged with “public insult and inciting hate” in France.
In a September 2012 Rolling Stone interview Dylan said:
“If you got a slave master or Klan in your blood, blacks can sense that. That stuff lingers to this day. Just like Jews can sense Nazi blood and the Serbs can sense Croatian blood.”
And the history is bloody. As a puppet Nazi government in During World War II, the Croatian government operated concentration camps in which Jews, Serbs, and other minorities were murdered. In the 1990s, both sides were involved in the bloody breakup of Yugoslavia.
Present-day Croatians aren’t happy that Dylan compared them to Nazis and Klan members. The Representative Council of the Croatian Community and Institutions, an organization that represents Croatians in France, filed the charges. The group’s secretary general, Vlatko Maric, told CNN: “The Croatians are peaceful people who respect Bob Dylan as an artist, but we must remind him that he can’t make such remark“.
They say they will drop charges if Dylan publicly apologizes.
