umidi: A Completely Customizable MIDI Controller…

Want to design your own aluminum MIDI controller? With umidi you can…

…for a low pledge of $845 on the project’s Kickstarter campaign.

Backers design their controller on umidi’s website. Components, lighting shapes, color, and a surface image are chosen. Up to 36 components are dragged onto a 6×6 grid. They come in nine colors and include knobs, encoders, faders, jog wheels, and push buttons. If umidi reaches a $50,000 goal they will also include drum pads.

The controller is plug and play. It is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux and works with Traktor, Ableton Live, Serato, and other software.

LCD lighting can be mapped by the user after the controller is set up. Any combination of color, sequence, and pulse can be programmed in the umidi editor application created by the company. They also invite users to create create their own hacks, widening the lighting possibilities.

umidi builds and tests each controller in their workshop. The project has raised $7,136 AUD so far. They need to hit $20,000 AUD by January 18th.
