Beats Music Found Violating US-Based Copyright Agreements…

On January 21st, Beats Music launched its subscription-based music service with US-based only licenses.  So why has this service been working outside the US for more than a week, for example, in Colombia?

(Shots taken at a shopping center at Calle 93 por Carrera 15 in Bogotá.  No, this trial account wasn’t started in the US.)

Here’s what happens when you try to access Beats overseas (for example, in Colombia) while on a Mac.

Other devices have not been tested, in this or the other 194 non-US countries.  So please let us know what you’re seeing outside the US.

The question is irrelevant. What I think you meant to ask is whether an account was started in the US, and taken overseas.

The answer is that there was no account initiated in the US. It was all initiated in Colombia.

No, I meant what I asked. If an ipad was purchased in the US then brought overseas then the App Store on the ipad may be treated as a US App Store. Or am I mistaken?

I see the argument you are making now. But, if that’s the case, why doesn’t Pandora work in Colombia for me? And, that’s an app I started in the US, and used extensively in the US (for years probably), before trying it in Bogotá.

Two apps, same iPad, same locations (obviously).

Paul – did you pay? With a US credit card? If so, then no issue, you’re registered as a US and it’s the same as all other services.

If they’re giving out free trials abroad – totally different ball game.

Answer: No. It’s a trial account. No payment made.

    Why are you in Columbia?

And, more importantly.. what’s up with that orange sport band thingy you are wearing?

    We need to know 😉

unless he registered for a free account while abroad this is expected behavior and applies to all services.

“Hold up. Beats Music is not yet available in your country. You can sign up for Beats Music in the United States, with more countries coming soon. Until then, keep up with us.”

That’s what I see when accessing from Brazil.

Just the evidence we need to burn this streaming service to the ground. Thanks Paul.

IP Geo Targeting is not 100% accurate. Never has been, never will. Labels know this. Unless the service are actively promoting in unlicensed territories they won’t have an issue.
