There's another gigantic wrinkle in the MegaUpload drama. Not only is MegaUpload fighting tooth-and-nail against Universal Music Group, but they're now planning the launch of a cloud-based music locker, download store, and do-it-yourself artist service. It's called MegaBox, and it's already up in beta with listed partners 7digital, Gracenote, Rovi, and Amazon MP3.

Actually, this is technically a relaunch of an earlier concept, and a perfect re-stab at major label opponents. "UMG knows that we are going to compete with them via our own music venture called Megabox.com, a site that will soon allow artists to sell their creations directly to consumers while allowing artists to keep 90 percent of earnings," MegaUpload founder Kim 'Dotcom' Schmitz told Torrentfreak this week.
In other words, another entry into the very crowded DIY space. But there's a lot more to this story. Instead of charging artists, Schmitz wants to pay artists - even for free downloads. "We have a solution called the Megakey that will allow artists to earn income from users who download music for free," Dotcom outlined. "Yes that's right, we will pay artists even for free downloads. The Megakey business model has been tested with over a million users and it works."
And there could be more mega-artist deals ahead, of the will.i.am variety. "You can expect several Megabox announcements next year including exclusive deals with artists who are eager to depart from outdated business models."

The rest looks like a combination platter of cloud-based music storage, download sales, and discovery, though the elements may still be coming together. In a test-drive this morning, we also found lots of major label content, but only managed to stream 30-second clips (we'll leave that discussion to the various armies of lawyers...)
MegaUpload has the capital to do this, but they are also pushing some emotional capital as well. That is, a stark juxtoposition between them and traditional media interests, ie major labels like UMG. "These guys think an iPad is a facial treatment, the internet is the devil, and wired phones are still hip," Schmitz blasted. "They are in denial about the new realities and opportunities. They don't understand that the rip-off days are over. Artists are more educated than ever about how they are getting ripped off and how the big labels only look after themselves."

I see Thursday, December 22, 2011
So, if you like it so much, why don't you go forward with your real name and support your business claim?
If you are an artist, what is your artist name?
If you are a label, what is your label's name?
Waiting patiently for your answer...!

HypocritRadar Monday, January 23, 2012
If you're gonna bash other people for saying they like a service and claim that it only matters if artists/bands like the service, what's your name? Which band are you in? Cause if you're not in a band or giving your real name on the Internet, your opinion apparently doesn't matter.
I don't have any opinions about MegaBox, but there's nothing bad about having more disruptive competition in an industry unless you happen to be in the mono-/oligo-poly.

Double Fatality !!!
By the way, rethinking old ways to become better for the source in new ways... If iTunes works, Megabox will most probably be a lot more... artist sustainable ;)
And, no, I don't see existing artists getting their rights to their songs back easily in order to make a 90 percenter out of it... Which seems to me a bit bold in the beginning, but it can accumulate fast in the long run... but other people/companies will start to move as well and try offer the best "service" in order to compete...
Either way, artists will always adept to the new ways in which people are being reached... a good/great artist will never really have to eat much less just because they are good at what they do. (not talking about the tons of talented people out there that don't get a change with the usual labels...) the internet is a nice platform to build a great userbase, a bunch of cheering fans that will lay down the dollar for a song, just because music lovers... well... "real" ones wouldn't mind ;) Not mentioning here the true purpose of the whole story either: to make it easy for people to discover new music/media without haviong to drag themselves all over the world to find a cd/mp3/cristal...
In short: there will always be pro's and con's... but please... do follow the money here... see who benefits... and decide for yourselves...

The iTunes bios most likely come from the artist's camp, not iTunes. The service is probably sent or directed to use the bio the label would like them to utilize.
The only thing that drives me nuts on DMN is that so many readers feel it necessary to try and debunk or deflate the validity of a vast majority of subject matter. Maybe the reader-base is on the older side—I don't know. But people need to get over what they think SHOULD be going on and accept that the industry has changed and so must we all. Or, go sell insurance.
Paul, that said, you still run a very good site.

I think the common thread there might be Rovi which listed as a partner for probably artist bios.

Im not saying kim isnt guily but I have been keeping up with the story and i wouldnt say the process of apprehending kim and his assets has been completely legal either.

naamah Tuesday, January 24, 2012
The 6 year old case of playing doctor is not rmeotely comparable to this repeat criminal who was/is well old enough to know what he has been doing.
"As a teenager, Schmitz earned a reputation in his native Germany for cracking corporate PBX systems in the United States, and tried to parlay it into a career in data security. That effort led to his arrest on charges of using and selling stolen calling card numbers.
According to a report by News & Record, he had traded stolen calling card numbers he bought from hackers in the United States.
n 2001, Schmitz purchased $375,000 worth of shares of the nearly bankrupt company LetsBuyIt.com and subsequently announced his intention to invest €50 million in the company. Unknown to others, Schmitz did not have the funds available to invest, although the announcement caused the share value of LetsBuyIt.com to jump by nearly 300%. Schmitz quickly sold the shares and profited $1.5 million as a result. Schmitz had also arranged and obtained an unsecured loan of €280,000 from Monkey AG, a company for which Schmitz had served as Chairman of the Board. The funds were to be paid to Kimvestor AG. As a result, both Monkey and Kimvestor went bankrupt.
Schmitz also pleaded guilty to embezzlement in November 2003 and received a two-year probation sentence.
An investigative piece found Schmitz in Hong Kong business records with the new name "Kim Tim Jim Vestor", allegedly bearing a Finnish passport, and acting as director of several "Mega-" companies, among them Megaupload Ltd. and Megarotic Ltd."

7digital and Amazon just gave me one more reason never to do any business with them. It is not just mafia people like Kim Dotcom-whatever that have to be avoided at all costs. It is also the oportunistic parasites of the so called "industry" who are willing to do deals with these kind of mafia people.

Anything that can have a posative effect on creating a standard for the return's to the Artist is a good move. The Artist in turn could give some of the 90% to the Production crew, for the finished sound file, or pay cash up front for a quality recording of their work. Either way I see this as a good move forward for all. [ http://vinciazee.yolasite.com ]-[ http://www.ipadharmony.biz ]-[ http://www.ipadaracmusic.com ]

First it was Amazon then was Facebook and now megaupload. It looks like everyone wants to have a music channel now. Read in an Indian magazine that Google is also going to introdcue such service. I don't think they can replicate the success of iTunes.

Amazon, gracenote, and Rovi are "partners" like I am a "partner" with McDonalds. Megauploads signed boilerplate services contracts like anyone else who wants to use those companies' services.

They might not be nice, but they do seem to be getting plenty of advert revenue. Id guess this works the same as youtubes payments. They earn advertising next to your media, and give you a % back.

Ryan Tuesday, January 24, 2012
It's called Youtube. It's the same business model. They offer free content and the uploaders get paid if they meet a view quota.
Mega Upload will also offer paid content which is the same as Itunes.
The business model doesn't seem that far fetched. As fas as how effective it is, the comedian Louis C. K. did something similar on his own website where you pay $5.00 on his website to watch his performance. The money goes straight to him, no middle men.
It's an awesome idea.

I think it'd be great if more money went to the artists, than what currently does. I'd happily buy my music from here instead.

Yo Tuesday, January 24, 2012
Let us make some connections.....
PRETTY SURE it would work like youtube where you get an amount for views (or listens in this case) and pretty sure you would get sponsored or partnered or whatever.
You would go through a similar process. So, no you would not exactly be able to put your music in there and make money like this is some joke.
If you put a video on youtube with your music and you suck...well youtube isn't going to take you and nor will this "megabox" if it ever is born officially.
If it is doable with Youtube videos....
then there is a good possibility it is doable for music.

You realize that the raid on MegaUpload was planned before this service was even announced - right?

Joe Wednesday, January 25, 2012
Uh, they likely got wind of the service being set up and tested. Why wait for it to get rolled out before they raided the company? Better to raid them BEFORE it gets rolled out and is widely accepted by the public.

Marty Wednesday, January 25, 2012
I think the reason Megaupload was taken down because after rapidshare court battle rapid did conform to pressure so Megaupload became the largest file sharing site. Megaupload was known for keeping alot of files alive - some for years. Obviously, Megaupload refused to conform with any copyright complaints so they had to be shut down. Megabox music service was probably some kind of desperate attempt to legitimize the business before the shit hit the fan.

Listen, all of you here---while you still have a breath in your lungs and your heart is still beating in your chest and you still alive by Gods mercy--turn away from sin and turn to Jesus Christ for eternal salvation and forgiveness of your sins
Its never too late--because if you die-it is then too late and lots of people go to hell every day but they had a a chance to repent and be forgiven and all of them did not use that chance--what a sad reality for them right now and they they will regret that for eternity in hell
Jesus already paid the price so all you have to do is accept His love and forgiveness which is free and freely given by Him to all that call on His name-He is the only way to heaven
