It's Official: Vinyl Sales Up 39 Percent In 2011...

Wednesday, January 04, 2012
by  paul

We've seen some conflicting data on vinyl sales this year, especially from indie stories. But this is looking pretty bullish: according to stats just released by Nielsen Soundscan, vinyl sales in the US topped 3.9 million in 2011, a 39.3 percent gain over 2010.  The modern-day LP resurgence now looks like this...

    ajleece Thursday, January 05, 2012

I don't even know what to say to that. CDs are not dead. Vinyl has never been dead. And believe it or not, you can buy thinks other than classic rock on vinyl. Like, Jazz, Trip Hop, Alternative, Classical, Melodic Death Metal, Post Hardcore. You are stupid, good sir.

    durruti Monday, January 09, 2012

Vinyl has never been dead.  Vinyl sales are up because of the digitalization of music.  MP3 (et al) makes the portability of CD's obsolete.  But music fans and stereophiles aren't satisfied with just files, we want A) something to collect and B) something we can interact with during actual listening sessions.  Since most vinyl albums come with an mp3 code now and mp3 can serve your portability needs, then there's really no reason to not use vinyl if you want to.

In addition, upwards of 50% of recorded music has only ever been released on vinyl. You can get tons of old records on the cheap, and you or people you know probably have a large cache of records hidden away somewhere waiting to be heard again.

    sigsaly_transmissions Wednesday, January 04, 2012

I wonder if it's mostly DJ's and colllectors?

    COMMENT Friday, January 06, 2012

It wouldn't be remarkable if it was. There's a reason they are collectible, folks are actually listening to 'em :)

Bobby Rainmaker Monday, January 16, 2012

I think that IS a big selling point, collector or DJ or not... They're highly 'cherishable'... If they didn't have that sound, likely they'd just gone away, but they do plus the other things that make you do stupid stuff just to have a particular one or a couple thousand or more... and nobody can effectively convince anyone of the "benefits" from a distance and convince them their worth of appreciation... That's an experience unto itself and only gained from it... Thing is... You don't actually have to know what the format is to be naturally attracted to see what "it" is... A good record just naturally draws you in... Then you have to look... Ah! That's all it really takes... I have several frames that I've not yet used and others I have - hanging them on the wall like a picture or other framed art... I don't pick the 'best' but anyway... several unused that I hadn't selected for and the other day i saw the little stack and got sad for a moment... thinking about how all the mp3's I've sourced over the last few years - well - there's some great sounds in there, but nothing, like i mentioned, to really cherish... Unlimited in nature... feeling the effects translated of 'that being all there is to 'show' for the track.. in the music I find today, mostly NOT on vinyl. And yeah... I'm a DJ... and I do feel its disposable nature, regardless the quality or creativity in the sound or track itself... It's just not enough for me to "love" or love on... :-) it's just not cherishable... that's really it for me...

    fisherlandco Friday, January 06, 2012

And some 15-year-olds, like my son.

    Versus Saturday, January 07, 2012

Isn't anyone who buys vinyl a vinyl collector? Just wondering....

Unless you mean those "collectors" who never play their records, or even seek out sealed copies which they never open. That becomes a fetish. Records are meant to be played!

    Cheers,

    - Versus

    @AlbertaMusic Wednesday, January 04, 2012

A few months ago the Alberta Music Industry Association held a panel discussion on how things have changed in the music industry over the past 20 years. Someone made a really good point to say that a person will buy vinyl if they want to keep the album as a collectors piece... something they plan to hold onto and value down the road... Where as someone who only wants the music will simply download the mp3.

Not really relevant to the discussion on sales of vinyl increasing... but interesting how those who really do value the artist's work are willing to purchase the vinyl versus the mp3.

    Visitor Wednesday, January 04, 2012

So glad to hear it! Digital music is great on the go but the warm sound of vinyl is what I want to hear at home.

More and more, the albums I buy come with a digital download which is the best of both worlds. Goodby cd's!!

beep boop Thursday, January 05, 2012

If you want a physical format, what reason is there to buy anything other than vinyl? MP3's have their place, they're super convenient, great for traveling but what good are CDs when you can play mp3s about anywhere and vinyl lasts longer and sounds better.

London Music Mapp Thursday, January 05, 2012

Same trend seems to be taking place in Europe.

There may have been more physical CD's sold last year but at what price. Revenue has fallen and streaming income is not making it's way through to artists.

Not to mention the ongoing legal action on Digital downloads being sales and not licenses which could cripple the recorded music giants.

All that and the purchase of EMI by Universal 2012 will be another landmark year in the music industry

«the ongoing legal action on Digital downloads being sales and not licenses which could cripple the recorded music giants»

You can't be bothered to read the Terms Of Use of your music store (Amazon, iTunes e.t.c.)?

    CBQ Thursday, January 05, 2012

I dug out my 40 year old vinyl copy of Yes's "Close to the Edge" last night. The slightest crackle was enough to convince me people who buy vinyl are deluded. For the best pure sound, closest to the original studio recordings, it has to be CD (which, incidentally, is ten times better sound-wise than an MP3 - so don't give us that pish about MP3s being the "same" as a CD).

Drag yourselves in to the 21st Century you luddites.

    Visitor Thursday, January 05, 2012

Actually...Know it all. You are deluded. Did you ever think the quaility of the vinyl that you played just wasn't up to par? Maybe you should see the benefits of "better" vinyl. Look into audiophile quality vinyl. Or how about when was the last time you cleaned your needle? Or better yet? Cleaned that record. Try again. User error.

    shawesome Thursday, January 05, 2012

But we must remember that a CD is just a sample of the analog sound wave.  Crackles aside, a good vinyl copy of a recording will sound better, warmer, and more natural than a CD (or mp3) in my opinion.  That's because a digital sound wave is an approximation of the original and by definition is not capturing the complete analog sound wave.

    mdti Friday, January 06, 2012

    neither does vynil....

a music produced digitally sounds much better than vynil.

Even in the analog world, vynil is a copy on wax of an analog TAPE recording.

You want the sound of the (antique) studios? go buy an otari or a revox and get hold of the tape masters!

    COMMENT Friday, January 06, 2012

The sound of audio tape survives two, even three generations of transfers if done with care. That's the problem. Not a lot of people are willing to put in the time, effort and money to make a superior sounding, analog recording anymore. Convenience has out-weighed quality. The sonic thumb-print that digital imparts to the recorded material is wholly undesirable to the musical sounding distortion that audio tape provides, and can be better translated to a piece of vinyl, than to any and all digital formats...

    Brookd. Thursday, January 05, 2012

I don't think the problem was with the sound of the vinyl.  I think the problem may have been that you were listening to Yes.

    Visitor Thursday, January 05, 2012

I tried explaining this point to my co-workers (we're audio engineering instructors) about cd sales & vinyl.

The cd was the last physical format. As teachers, we are taught that people have different learning styles, be it visual, aural, or kinesthetic. My theory is that a certain percentage of the population are kinesthetic, meaning that they feel more connected to a physical item, rather than a file. Not saying this is absolute science, but it will be interesting to see how physical sales play out now that we've reached the last development in physical formats.

I personally believe we'll always need physical formats, and the non-tangibility of files will never sit well with everybody, i don't think.

Vinyl is definitely very alive in the punk rock scene. Most bands bring vinyl when they tour through Europe, and old punk rockers (me, 36) and the youngsters (18-25) are buying and collecting the vinyl. A lot of people are even buying the same record in different colors. It is awesome and rekindled my love for collecting great music.

I went to a festival in October and came home with fourteen 12"-es (and even a few cassette tapes, yes they also still exist). What's cool about the vinyl is the free download code so you can get the files to go on your mp3-player as well. Best of both worlds!

It's so much fun to collect vinyl, and have a tangible product which looks great in your collection.

What sort of music is being bought on vinyl?

I can only speak for myself, but when buying music a physical format, I want music that will stand the test of time. Downloadable music encourages one to overconsume, and often I have bought a lot of music on emusic, iTunes, etc, that I never listen to, or quickly tire of.

With vinyl, I would rather have a smaller selection of albums I really love and want to listen to repeatedly for many years (even for life), rather than a massive collection of music ranging from superb to forgettable.

Do others find this as well?
