Here's another reason to fret about the future of Turntable.fm. On Thursday, Facebook started unwrapping a simultaneous, shared listening feature, one that initially involves its preferred music partner, Spotify.

The "Listen With" concept enables friends to enjoy music together in a shared space. "You can listen to the same song, at the exact same time — so when your favorite vocal part comes in you can experience it together, just like when you're jamming out at a performance or dance club," explained Facebook designer Alexandre Roche.

Other music partners are understood to be next, with TechCrunch pointing to Rdio support over the next few days.
This seems to rip apart another thin wall of privacy, though let's see how it goes. Instead of just watching what a friend is enjoying, you can now jump into the experience and create a common room. Others can also join and discuss, with newsfeeds publishing the shared activity.

Of course, Turntable.fm has a totally different look-n-feel, and there's always room for overlapping concepts. Except that Turntable's biggest successes happened in July, and sinking traffic suggests this was just a summer fad. Facebook may now be cementing that fate.

When FIERCE is used in a headline, something has to be going down!

so if eleven people are in a common room together listening to the same track, that means that Spotify will multiply the streaming rate times eleven. right?

Interested in hearing the answer to this as well.

That will indeed make 11 streams because every single listeners uses his own Spotify client and account. And these 11 streams will make the artist about 7 cents.

That eleven streams will make nothing close to 7 cents. Not even a fraction of that.

It may come as a surprise with all these rumours of low pay outs all over the internet. I run a label. Spotify pays $ 0.0063 per stream according to my last statement. A year ago it was some $ 0.0031.

Is this a performance or mechanical? Has to be one of the two? Or both?

I hope Gaga and Ye kept the receipt.

I really dug turntable.fm. Need to get back into it. Will be interesting to see how bad "Listen With" is...

It's both a mechanical and a performance. It's basically an on-demand stream, which Spotify, MOG, et al already pay through their negotiated label deals. But the group listening streams also have to be reported to the PROs as part of the services' public performance licenses.

I closed my Spotify account this week...pretty soon facebook will be letting all your friends know when you picked your nose...sharing something fun like music is how facebook will ease everyone into giving up additional privacy in the future.
So go pick your nose now while you can without your friends knowing it.

 That's a little over-reactionary thinking. Facebook does have adjustable privacy settings, you know.

This is good for royalties if it's one stream per listener.

Saw this coming from a million miles away.
