We're giving away 100 euros in networking cash to a randomly-selected commenter. Details below.
Say what you will about MIDEM (and we have), this is still one of the best places for music industry networking. And most MIDEM attendees aren't sipping wine and philosophizing over foie gras, they're scheduling back-to-back meetings, making serious deals, and flying home with more than just a stack of business cards.
So are you here? And if so, what the hell are you doing here? Please, introduce yourself and tell us what types of deals you're striking, what you're announcing, where you're hanging out, a crazy survival tip, etc. Or, if you're not here, tell us why you're skipping it this year.

Oh, and hope to see you in person as well.
The 100 euros can be used for anything: a dealmaking dinner, drinks, or just to defray travel costs, even if you're not at MIDEM. Please just comment with a registered username, or clearly post your contact details and we'll announce the winner after the event.

You should definitely check out “In the Key of Success: The Five Week Jump-Start Strategy”. This E-course was recently published by Cheryl B. Engelhardt, a musician and composer who has performed across the US and Europe, written music for commercials and film/TV, and has spoken at many colleges and music conferences about building a career as an independent musician. Visit her website -- http://www.cbemusic.com/ecourse/ -- to download a personal copy. It will help you figure out your goals as a musician and, more importantly, it will show you how to achieve the results you want. Her advice is extremely effective and the E-course is an amazing value!

I'm at Midem, pitching my startup in midemlab, and working on fundraising and business development deals. This is my first Midem, and I don't know the lay of the land yet. So please give me 100 Euros with a map, and I promise to put it to good use :-) And my modest hotel is a good distance from the Palais de Congres, so cab money would be awesome too!
Cheers,
A hustling entrepreneur

Haven't been in a few years (including this year) but learned some nasty Midem tips may I share?
1) Don't make a call on your phone until you know the int'l rates! This can cost you $100s
2) If you're gonna go cheap, there's a McDonalds (no shame)
3) Don't assume you have WIFI anywhere (maybe it's gotten better)
4) Drinks at the big name hotels like Carlton are VERY expensive AVOID
5) Make sure you know your Euro conversions and expect hideous unexpected charges out of random corners
HTH!

Tip: Put your Midem bag in a plastic shopping bag take off your pass and go eat in the back streets with the locals. Avoid all restaurants on the Croisette, the Old Town/Old Port and you won't need the Macdo.
Oh, at the end of the day you'll see all the guys who don't know anybody swapping business cards with each other. You don't need those cards!

Yeah avoid macdonalds. You're in France. Go to a local market and buy a baguette and some cheese etc. please

Agreed! I used to live in Cannes. Still, during conferences (and there are many all year round in Cannes) restaurants and supermarkets up their prices but affordable restaurants around Rue Foch and the train station do exist. If you fancy middle eastern grub then take the underpass next to the train station and on the other side you'll be in little Beirut...quite pleasant.

Tip:
There is great kebab place just up from Morrison's pub in the square. Very tasty chicken kebabs that they wrap in with fries for 6 EUR.Walk past the pub to the square, stay on the left and you'll come to it. Doubt it'll be on Yelp but worth visiting each day of your stay.

Agreed.
Best Kebabs in town.
And right next door to the best live event of this years Midem (Morrisons pub) thanks to the Canadian Blast event.

Staying at a 100 euro / night hotel, eating cheaply, meeting a bunch of existing business partners and a few new potential ones, checking out some of the tech start-ups at Midem's new D2F camp & "Innovation Factory", getting up with SoundExchange to look at my data with them, sharing a few drinks at the A2IM cocktail mixers and then drinks with friends at Morrisons or The Quay at night.
Not cheap but it's still way better (for business) than any industry event I know. I think the deals and relationships I make by coming each year directly impacts my bottom line and I think it's healthy to take this time each year to think about our business, hear from peers about our business, and discuss new opportunities.

I'm a singer/songwriter and I'm taking the train from Italy cause someone told me about MIDEM. I'm not participating in any conventions obviously. I don't know what to expect.

Dance on the sidewalks like Fred Astaire and don't step on the doggy doo......everywhere. The French love their dogs but don't pick-up and France is the doggy doo capital of the world

Hello all! I would have loved to be at Midem this year but I'm making the jump from full time employment to freelancing as a Digital and Music Consultant in a month's time and so wasn't able to make it. Have been following through Digital Music News and will hopefully be coming next year! Enjoy today's events.

Tim Potocic - Sonci Unyon Monday, January 30, 2012
Sonic Unyon have been quietly attending MIDEM since 1997. A small CDN company who specialize in niche rock genres. We come to MIDEM to meet with international like minded partners.FYI - very rarely get invited or even know about the swanky parties you refer to in the other article. Almost all our global partners are still attending. There is a lot less crap - this is great. But is also very sad to see as some crap turns into gold down the road and there is certainly going to be less of that type of conversion. The indies are keeping this industry alive. The majors - sorry - your cluesless guys and Im not going to hire you when your looking for a job. MIDEM has changed drastically, if the majority of my global partners stop coming or decide to attend SXSW then c'est La Vie France. It was a nice ride!
Also, Im already gone to Paris.... the last day of MIDEM has been totally shit the last 3 years. If I win the 100 Euro cash prize give it to the closest major label flunky - he/she needs it more.

I flew to Midem from L.A some years ago, and it was a good experience. I am a Music Publisher. I planned our meetings in advance. We made a couple deals. Don't miss the European Classical Music Awards. It is the best music experience I have had in years. contact:nestor@rodriguezentertainment.com

Well I came as an artist to network and find a publishing deal for my new album and my film score projects. A sheep among the wolves you might say...
As I write this, the event finished 2 days ago and i'm still sorting out the cards/flyers/demos etc (mostly into the bin actually)
anyway better late than never - here's my take on it...
I'm a brit based in Paris so it wasn't too far to come. And although I'm no stranger to France and the French, the event was new to me, and by all accounts definately NOT what it used to be.
My buddy told me to "go hang about in the Carton - that's where its all happenning"
All very well except that
(i) my buddy stayed warm and dry in London and (ii) no the Carlton was not really where it was happenning UNLESS
(iii)you were a classical/jight jazz german distributor looking to meet a Koreen importer and (iV) you were ok with 21 euros for a whyskey-coke /gin an tonic.
Call me old fashioned but the event was sadly missing MUSIC. We might have just as well been attending an event selling frozen vegetables. And another thing - If I had a euro for the amount of times I heard buzz words like "pushing revenue" or "target your fan base" in the conferences, I would have enough to pay for well ... atleast 1 whiskey-coke...
The french indie labels from Rhone Alps actually played some music on their stand as the they poured out glasses of Cote du Rhone to amazed attendees reminding us for a minute that (i) it was supposed to be about music and (ii) you were still in france. (Merci les gars!)
On a positive note- I met some publishers who were interested and listened to my ipad soundcloud demo on the spot (thankfully the midem's free wifi held up!). The film score projects interested quite a few too.
So the follow up works starts now.
But my hat goes off to the Canadians for putting on the Canaidan Blast show every night in the Irish pub's 2 venues (Hendersons & Hendersons Lounge). The quality and diversity of bands was really very good and as although an "midem off" event, this seemed to be where everyone met every night as at least 4 -5 acts (per night & per venue) gave everyone something to talk about the next day in the coffee line up.
Great work Shain Shapiro for organising this every year! And to the Hendersons pub for making (almost) every band sound good.
I'm seriously thinking of bringing some of these Canadian bands to Paris to organise some "gig swapping" event for when I go over to Toronto later in the year.
Didn't see any british acts though. But of course we're above all that aren't we ? Wouldn't have hurt to actually showcase a few British bands would it? Or maybe they did an I blinked.
So time will tell if the event was a success (for me) or not - long after everyone's feet dry (did I mention the rain?), and 99% of all the exchanged business cards become recycled waste.
