For every critic that poops on you, a thousand fans are born. And the harsher the reviews, the stronger the defenders - and potential buyers. Which might explain why Lana Del Rey's latest album, Born to Die, just hit number one on iTunes in 14 different countries. The list includes the US, UK, Italy, France, Germany, Finland, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, Greece, Belgium, Portugal, Mexico, and Luxemburg.
Separately, the artist is expected to hit number two on the Billboard 200, just behind Adele.

Of course, the most bitter and vitriolic reviews followed Del Rey's performance on Saturday Night Live, though we've heard mixed reviews on the album. And Del Rey is now calmly defending both her performance and release...

...and telling this to Rolling Stone about her SNL outing (RS' critic Rob Sheffield told Del Rey's "song doctors" to go "the f--k back to med school...")

It is possible to put shit to record, pass it off as 'music', and sell a ton of records. You ever hear of rap?

Gareth Wednesday, February 01, 2012
You's Ign't!

The real question is have YOU ever heard of rap?
The percentage of shit is pretty high in every genre of popular music. Why single out rap?
Oh, I get it. You mean its because rap is made by "those people." Those, uh, rappers who are as diverse a group of humans as any other. I've heard some pretty awesome rap from Malaysia, Korea, England, Portugal, Zimbabwe among other places. Funny, I also heard some amazing metal, jazz, folk, classical, traditional and pop from the same places.
Prolly cuz music be the universal language, Yo.

Oh no please tell me Lana del Ray isn't holding out on Spotify..

Big Deal Wednesday, February 01, 2012
How much did Interscope spend to prime the pump? Probably more money than Lana Del Rey could ever hope to recoup. What's her royalty rate again? Let's ask daddy.
We know she can't sing live and has zero stage presence. Who would pay to see that? Maybe she'll do her listless D-list Rita Hayworth on ludes act in various tent festivals this summer.
How much will her album sell next week? 70% less? Who cares, it's all about the car crash.

She definitely has stage presence. Is she perfect live? No. From my vast concert experience I've heard very few singers that are perfect night-in and night-out.
Its pretty impressive what Interscope has done with her since her March signing last year.

I mean, it even has a Spotify-exclusive track.

It's strange. That link works and we've heard other people can access it. But on our end, it's hard to find through search.

mdti Monday, February 06, 2012
(probably as boring as mine to her ears ;-)

Man Thursday, February 02, 2012
Though I found the album to be mediocre, I still want to do her so I'm confused.

It was listed in Spotify's new releases days ago: http://open.spotify.com/album/4X8hAqIWpQyQks2yRhyqs4

Andre Thursday, February 02, 2012
She's doing a live in-store at Amoeba next week. I'm going just to see if SNL was a one-off (no pun intended)

SPELLCHECK Thursday, February 02, 2012
I am the ghost of copywriters past. Google is your friend. LANA DEL REY. It's in the actual image posted, Paul's intern. Come on, you misspelled it a few different times. It's hard to take a news item seriously if it's not even spellchecked.
