Sony Music Entertainment is now seriously cashing in on Whitney CDs and downloads - but this is a delicate money-grubbing affair. Which is why the label is still damage-controlling an opportunistically-timed iTunes price hike, which somehow happened just hours after Houston was found dead in a bathtub. "Whitney Houston product was mistakenly mispriced on the UK iTunes store on Sunday," the label 'massaged'. "When discovered, the mistake was immediately corrected. We apologize for any offense caused."
A Spanish court has just dismissed a case against movie-sharing site Cinetube.es, based on a structure that links to infringing content instead of hosting it.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has just launched a free streaming radio and on-demand service at cbcmusic.ca. The service features 40 web stations and two terrestrial streams, among other features.
There's another one: Kenny Rogers is the latest legacy artist to sue his label (in his case, Capitol/EMI) over digital royalty calculations. This is all part of a growing battle over whether digital assets are treated as discrete sales or licenses, with the latter yielding a much higher artist payout. The suit, filed in US District Court of Tennessee in Nashville, also alleges that EMI failed to compensate Rogers following successful settlements against Limewire, Grokster, and Napster.
Google has now gained regulatory approval - on both sides of the Atlantic - for its acquisition of Motorola Mobility and its fierce patent portfolio. Other approvals, particularly those in Asia, await.
