Instragram made countless hipsters around the world feel like professional photographers. Now, there's an app that could do the same for music videos. It's called Ptch, and it just launched for iPhone and iPad users. Users can choose from a host of preset effects and transitions (similar to Instagram), and also 'remix' videos and pictures from other people who are using the app. The 'ptch' is a 60-second clip, overlayed with music from the user’s library. Check out a sample here.
Korean consumer electronics giant Samsung Electronics recently won a patent case in Britain brought on by Apple. The suit asserted that Samsung's Galaxy tablets were too similar in design to the iPad. In a quirky ruling, High Court judge Colin Birss claimed that consumers were unlikely to confuse the two tablets, as the Samsung products are 'not as cool'.
Speaking of Samsung, the company just released a beta test for Music Hub, a new app that is sort of a cross between Google Music and Spotify. The app will initially be exclusive to the Samsung Galaxy S III. You can read more about the app and its features here.
Youtube-mp3.com, a service that allows users to convert YouTube videos to mp3 files, continues to be given the cold shoulder by Google. If you’re just getting caught up on this one, Youtube recently sent a cease-and-desist letter to Youtube-mp3, and has effectively shut down the site's functionality. However, Youtube-mp3 is adamant they’re service is user-, and not profit-oriented, and therefore legal. Ironically, Google used the same case in defense of its own service, Google Books, against accusations of stealing traffic from other online publishers. This case just oozes double-standard. Stay tuned.
Drug-dealing and mobbing have always been a central theme of hip-hop music. Rick Ross is one rapper who has never been shy about touting that image. But could it be a façade? Former drug kingpin 'Freeway' Ricky Ross is suing Warner Bros. Records for $10 million, alleging that Ross stole his name and created a fraudulent persona. Today, an LA Superior judge rejected the Warner Bros. motion to dismiss the case. WB has not made any statement.
Kanye West is taking his talents to the Creative Artists Agency (CAA) and parting ways with Irving Azoff and industry giant William Morris Agency. Reports state that West is reuniting with longtime agent Cara Lewis, who left the William Morris Agency several months ago.
The Who never played Providence, Rhode Island in 1979, thanks to a safety-related cancellation by then-mayor Buddy Cianci. Which brings us to 2012, where the Who is now playing the same gig - albeit at the rebranded the Dunkin Donuts Center - and honoring any unused tickets from '79.
