Just to put in my two cents, Copyright was initially intended for the betterment of all society by promoting art and science to eventually be publicly available. The original terms was for 14 years with one 14 year extension if the author was still alive.

Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and
Discoveries." It makes sense because it is always cheaper for a person who didn't make the work to make a profit because they don't have to cover developing costs. That all being said, I think that record companies are a failed model. There are too many people to pay along the way that you have to share the money with and in todays age, there are plenty of people who make good original content with little or no extra help and make money doing it. Now with sites like Kickstarter it seems to make more sense that musicians and whoever they work with should see how much they want to get paid to make an album including costs and then ask the community to pay for it up front, offer a free download, and sale physical copies and merch. That way it doesn't really matter how popular your stuff is as long as it is popular for you to fundraise your next album.
