Chris Brown not only kept his deal with Sony Music, he's still making a lot of money. So what about Def Jam-signed Lil Reese, recently filmed brutally beating a woman? That is now a decision for top executives at the label, a unit of Universal Music Group, thanks to mounting pressure from Change.org and others.
The video, which shows Reese stomping and beating on a young woman during an argument, has been pulled from YouTube since emerging several weeks go. YouTube initially deemed it 'disgusting and vulgar' in its pulldown notice, a violation of its policies, though like other yanked clips, it has been re-uploaded.
According to Charge.org's Shareeza Bhola, this is about corporations taking the proper stance against violence, particularly against women. "Lil Reese took to Twitter to confirm that he assaulted the young woman and issued what some have called a weak apology," Bhola told Digital Music News. "Outraged by the assault, Christelyn Karazin, a writer and blogger living in the San Diego area, started a campaign on Change.org asking Def Jam Records to release him from his contract, hoping that the famed company would take a stand against Reese's violent act."
"The responsibility to speak out starts with the record label that promotes his music, Def Jam Records. Their silence -- their refusal to create any consequence for Lil Reese in the face of this awful violence -- reinforces a culture of misogyny and violence against women far more than any music lyric could."
The Change.org campaign, here, is now reaching the 5,000-signature threshold. It is specifically directly at Island Def Jam CEO Barry Weiss and Def Jam Records president Joie Manda.
And, here's the video. In case it needs to be stated, it's NSFW.

They won't drop him.
Maybe back in the day you could get companies to drop gangsta rappers. Not anymore. It's too much money on the line.

Glad someone posts this for others to see, but still, its not going to chagne a thing about him getting signed. They are in it for business, and this is publicity... "no publicity is bad publicity." The music business makes a buck off of others, they really couldn't care less what happens as long as they see dollar signs. Its pretty stupid of anyone or any website to think that the record label will care. They need the money and the publicity. They are probably psyched right now at how much press they are getting for their new, unheard of, run of the mill rapper who probably sucks. Sorry I didn't bother listening to the auto-tuned and likely over-produced tracks before posting my comment, but frankly who cares. Its all the same crap - this is what you get when a whole musical genre sets the bar really low at beating women, drinking, wearing expensive jewelry as a man, and generally aspiring to useless things instead of creating a healthy musical environment to operate in. I still can't help but to think "who taught you it was ok to stomp a woman." Jeeze what low class losers.

i don't believe in the hitting women, for no reason, but in this case, it looks like she swung first, starting the fight, and he finished it. Did he have to beat her that badly? No? But at the end of the day, she wanted to be tough and strike him. Is it not wrong that she struck the man first. I hate how society expects men to let women hit on them, and just take it. Thank you lil reese, i hope if another woman hits her you do the same thing, just one punch straight to the jaw and knock her out, no need to punch her 20 times and kick her, thats just brutal. notice how they mentioned nothing of the girls putting their hands on him and threatning him with a gun if you listen closely. Respect to you lil reese, respect to you.

She did not hit him first. He put his filthy hands in her face and she simply moved it out of her face. I would have done the same thing. She told him to get out of her house and they wanted to act like idiots. Come on!
