Your Favorite Band Will Never Play at SeaWorld Again…

seaworldissue1

This is the power that one documentary is wielding against a massive, multi-billion dollar amusement corporation.  As of this morning, Cheap Trick became the fourth band this month to cancel an upcoming SeaWorld performance in Orlando, according to details confirmed to Digital Music News.

And just like Heart, Willie Nelson, and Barenaked Ladies before them, the Blackfish documentary, coupled with a Change.org petition, did the trick.  “Cheap Trick is a foundational part of my history, it would break my heart as a fan to think that Cheap Trick participated in the promotion of SeaWorld,” commented ‘Emerald F.’ of Australia, one of more than 3,600 fan signatures.

The next developments seem predictable.  Change.org petitioners are now targeting a slate of upcoming performers, including Trisha Yearwood, REO Speedwagon, Justin Moore, Scott McCreery, Martina McBride, and 38 Special, all of whom are now likely to cancel in the coming weeks.

And the momentum is moving quickly against SeaWorld: Blackfish has now been shortlisted for an Oscar, and every canceling band is only drawing more attention to the widely-available documentary.

SeaWorld, meanwhile, is doing only a mediocre job of damage control.

“While we’re disappointed a small group of misinformed individuals was able to deny fans what would have been great concerts at SeaWorld by Heart, Barenaked Ladies and Willie Nelson, we respect the bands’ decisions,” SeaWorld stated.
