Rdio Shuts Down Vdio, ‘Not Able to Deliver a Differentiated Customer Experience’

Vdio

Perhaps Rdio’s vision of designing “the best experience for the watch-and-listen-anywhere, share-everything, stream-it-now era of content distribution” wasn’t meant to be.

Rdio has discontinued Vdio, saying they “were not able to deliver the differentiated customer experience” they had had hoped for.

Vdio also says the service was not “attractive to shareholders”.

Rdio first launched Vdio for their customers on the web and iPad in April 2013. They opened the service to everyone in the U.S. and U.K. in June. They were meant to be a competitor to Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, and Hulu — offering social features. Users could rent or buy videos and TV shows and could make and share playlists. Vdio also let users see what their friends were watching in real time and join in.

Customers that made purchases or have unused rental content will be given Amazon gift cards.

Vdio never made sense. It was nothing like the Rdio business model and was more expensive with a worse selection than their competitors.
