We burned Milli Vanilli at the stake, stripped them of their medals, and drove them into pop infamy. So how do we handle the now-confirmed case of Beyonce lip-synching America's National Anthem in front of millions, at an historic Inauguration ceremony to boot?
Unfortunately, this is now 'official official': Beyonce was not actually singing, according to word from an Inauguration official to CNN. Earlier, the US Marine Band did their best to double-talk and protect the star singer, but unfortunately, they were being placed (or, agreeing to place themselves) in a very difficult position. "She did not sing live," the official flatly shared, while pointing to anxiety over the possibility of a non-rehearsed, rushed performance in cold temperatures.
Something about the schedules, arriving late, being busy with Super Bowl halftime preparations, etc. "Because she didn't have time to rehearse with the Marine Band, she decided to use her recording with the Marine Band," the official added, while noting that Beyonce herself - and no one else - insisted on the arrangement.
It gets worse: because the Marine Band was actually playing, of course they know this tune by heart. But they acquiesced to Beyonce and subsequently compromised their reputation by assisting a cover-up. "Regarding Ms. Knowles-Carter's vocal performance," band spokesman Capt. Gregory Wolf stated earlier this week. "No one in the Marine Band is in a position to assess whether it was live or pre-recorded."
The Beyonce camp has yet to respond. The Super Bowl halftime performance is scheduled for February 3rd.

Though this could tarnish Beyonce's reputation as a performer, it is ridiculous to compare her to Milli Vanilli. Milli Vanilli were exposed for not only lip-synching, but for lip-synching to the vocal performances of other artists.

MV were also disposable; they were a pop act completely manufactured and really had no talent...

Oh, come on, Paul.... Comparing Beyonce to Milli Vanilli? Beyonce lip-synched one highly-visible performance in a difficult outdoor setting. Milli Vanilli lip-synched their entire careers to other people's work.
Yo Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman were not live, but recorded, at the 2009 Inauguration (due to the cold weather, they said); this was a five minute scandal which was about four minutes more than it was worth. Nobody has proposed burning these esteemed classical musicians at the stake.

Milli Vanilli didn't even sing in their records! The comparison is inappropriate.

Aretha lip-synched at the last inauguration. Get over it.

I see no "debate" here Paul, only tabloid journalism and the unanimous opinion from your readers that comparing Beyonce to Milli Vanilli is absolutely ludacris.

Paul just loves to be provactive...
Plenty of outstanding artists sing along with TV tracks, or, lip sync from time to time.
It's straining on the vocal chords to sing in the cold. Also, we all know Bey can sing.
I'd put my money on Beyonce over Adele anyday in a competition.
How's that for provactive?

It's the same as Milli Vanilli, and I'm not saying that Beyonce can't sing--but this particular context calls for a proper live performance, not canned Bullshit. Kelly Clarkson sang it magnificently at the Super Bowl, as live as could be.

I think the real issue here is perhaps an aberration of the obvious and abhorent reincarnation of the fact that nonsenical values need not be feared above and beyond the unanimous and voracious want and need of that which we crave. Honey. In a sandwich.

Actually Aretha DID NOT lip-sync at the 2009 inauguration. She recently said that if there is a next time she probably would lip-sync.

How's this for un-American?...
Why do we have to be entertained at a presidential inauguration?
Why couldn't the Marine Band play and the audience sing the National Anthem?

Amaeturs shouldn't be making music..
Versus Sunday, January 27, 2013
What's an "artist" of mindless pop doing performing at a presidential inaugaration anyway? The musicians should be featured should be those with some deeper artistic merit than "I'm up on him he up on me".
Then again, cheap pandering to the masses is sadly very "American" these days.

And I assume that YOU are the person who should decide what the line is between good art and bad art?
