Conor Oberst Consulting Attorney Over Anonymous Rape Allegation…

40609_143280225694905_4428852_n

This all started with an anonymous commenter, who accused Conor Oberst of raping her 10 years ago.  The extremely serious comment was posted in response to an xoJane article titled  ”It Happened To Me: I Dated A Famous Rock Star & All I Got Was Punched In The Face“. The comment was subsequently posted to Tumblr and now has thousands of notes, although the original Tumblr post has been deleted.

Conor Oberst’s team obviously couldn’t sweep this under the rug, so they released a statement via AbsolutePunk:

“Usually we wouldn’t feel the urge to comment on spurious blog chatter but the recent allegations made about Conor Oberst by an anonymous commenter on the xoJane website are flagrant enough to demand our response. This individual’s accusations are absolutely, unequivocally false. Unfortunately, the internet allows for groundless statements like this to travel the world before the truth has any time to surface. This is a particularly serious and sickening allegation and there is no truth to it. Conor has nothing but abhorrence for the perpetrators of such crimes of sexual violence. The behavior attributed to him by this individual is in direct opposition to his principles. Conor is consulting with a libel attorney regarding this matter.”

More as it develops.

It is entirely irresponsible for you to make a clearly biased statement such as “Conor Oberst’s team obviously couldn’t sweep this under the rug”…

Implying that the circumstances are concrete and everything an anonymous, online blogger has said is to be taken as gospel.

This is clearly why people think journalists lack integrity. You clearly know nothing about specific details of the situation – so by spreading this rumour with a layer of judgement, you are completely undermining the accused’s right to speak up.

Sadly there are a percentage of the population that omit false rape allegations. Conor Oberst by all previous accounts is a very unlikely suspect of violence, it takes listening to any of his lyrics to work that one out. Plus there are many factors that make me strongly doubt this allegation. Though I am female and am strongly disturbed by mere stories of rape – it is clear that people have been FAR too hasty to jump on Conor Oberst for a BLOG POST. Which the girl has now tried to retract somewhat, possibly too embarrassed to retract it altogether.

She is entitled to speaking up. And so is Conor Oberst.
Why should there be such discrepancy in this right?
Just because it has been said, does not mean it is true. Following something blindly makes you look like a fool.

I despise this article and it’s shortsightedness.

I think you’re jumping the gun here Stephanie. All they said was that his team obviously couldn’t sweep this under the rug. How I read that was that it was such a serious allegation that he and his “team” had to issue a statement, or it implied they felt compelled to at least. That sentence could have been omitted and the article would have been the same. You’re kind of nit-picking here. All DMN is doing is reporting what they heard. If that sentence bugs you, I beg you to never turn on a television or pick up a newspaper, or basically read anything ever again.

I dont think so.. the idiom “sweep under the rug” does usually imply fault. Libelous in court of law? most likely not, but its still skirting the edge..

          key word being “ignore”

Sure, I apologise. I was really angry when I wrote that comment and took it to mean only one thing.

Agreed. I really don’t think Nina meant anything close to what Stephanie is accusing.

Excellent point Stephanie, no one with nice lyrics could ever be capable of violence. I’m totally with you on this one. Isn’t Conor dreamy?

Haha ok, fair enough. I think my comments may have been somewhat premature. I wrote that when I was extremely frustrated and hadn’t really had time to think it through. I guess I am somewhat biased due to my love of the band. I was just trying to point out the importance of being objective. But yes, may have jumped the gun a little bit there.
