Last year digital downloads declined across the board for the first time ever in the U.S… but what about other countries?

Canada and the U.K. saw a rise in digital music sales in 2013.

  • In Canada digital album sales went up 9 percent. 11.4 million units were sold in 2013, up from 10.5 million in 2012. Digital track sales went up 2 percent, from 114.3 million to 116.1 million.
  • In the U.K. digital album sales rose 6.8 percent, with 32.6 million tracks sold in 2013. Digital track sales went down slightly from 186.6 million in 2012 to 182.2 million in 2013
  • In the U.S. digital track sales fell from 1.34 billion in 2012 to 1.26 billion in 2013, a decrease of 5.7 percent. Digital album sales fell from 117.7 million in 2012 to 117.6 million in 2013, a decrease of 0.1 percent.

Overall album sales dropped in all three countries: 8.4 percent in the U.S., 6 percent in Canada, and 6.4 percent in the UK. This could be attributed to the rise in music streaming: overall, streaming rose 32 percent in the U.S. and 34 percent in the U.K.

I’m not aware of any medium or large on-demand audio streaming companies in Canada. Is there even a small on-demand audio streaming company in this country?

Drop in recorded purchases in Canada, UK and USA likely a result of known and unknown extenuating reasons.

You should take a class on how NOT to sound like a robot. It’d do you wonders.

Rdio, Deezer, and Slacker all offer service in Canada. Rdio seems to have seen the most success so far which isn’t saying too much.
