Rap Genius, the “most blatantly illegal lyrics site,” has arranged a licensing agreement with Universal Music Publishing Group.
Rap Genius founder Ilan Zechory says:
“Rap Genius lets UMPG’s writers connect with their most obsessed fans, and we couldn’t be more excited about solidifying this partnership.”
Rap Genius already has a deal with Sony/ATV and has been meeting with major and indie publishers. However, these meetings came after the National Music Publishers’ Association threatened Rap Genius with legal action over copyright infringement. NMPA said Rap Genius “ignored the law” and profited from songwriters’ works.
