Rap Genius Enters a Deal With Universal Music Publishing…

Rap Genius, the “most blatantly illegal lyrics site,” has arranged a licensing agreement with Universal Music Publishing Group.

Rap Genius founder Ilan Zechory says:

“Rap Genius lets UMPG’s writers connect with their most obsessed fans, and we couldn’t be more excited about solidifying this partnership.”

Sure…

Rap Genius already has a deal with Sony/ATV and has been meeting with major and indie publishers. However, these meetings came after the National Music Publishers’ Association threatened Rap Genius with legal action over copyright infringement. NMPA said Rap Genius “ignored the law” and profited from songwriters’ works.

    Mr. Keeling and his ubiquity.
I do not buy it! – let’s finish those nerdy games and start NORMAL monetization of music, it’s SIMPLE.

Maybe someone here can explain this to me. Why is it illegal to post lyrics? Many times I will search based off of a lyric to find the song I heard on the radio or in the background at a supermarket or wherever.. I’d think it would be a tool to help discover music?

It would be ABSOLUTELY PERFECT AND FAIR if they would give you just 60 second, unmarked sample of that tune with option to buy or add to your play list for just 39 cents.

Your tune supplier (Spotify, Shazam, Rap Crap etc) would have you current play list to avoid multiple purchasing ( should you be drunk while tune-hunting)

Any ID provider, including lyrics ID should be forced under new “fair use” to sanity.

They are THE LOOTERS of the industry preventing conventional merchandising.
