A Recording of a “600 Year Old Butt Song” From Hieronymus Bosch’s ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’

Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights is one of the creepiest / coolest paintings of all time. The triptych shows Adam and Eve on the left, humans engaging in debauchery in the center, and a twisted depiction of Hell on the right.

Tumblr user chaoscontrolled123 noticed a musical composition being written on someone’s butt on the right side of the triptych. Here’s  a closer look:

Chaoscontrolled123 decided to transcribe the music, saying:

“I decided to transcribe it into modern notation, assuming the second line of the staff is C, as is common for chants of this era.

so yes this is LITERALLY the 600-years-old butt song from hell”

The music isn’t as inspiring as the painting, listen here.

As the transcriber of the butt song, I just want to let people know that yes there are some inaccuracies! I threw this together really quickly and I’m only a second-year music major, haha. I’m gonna take it to the music department at my college tomorrow and see if one of the faculty can help me make some corrections!

Can you transcribe the music to the left of that? Or is that the same?

I don’t think it’s the same, I can give that a shot tomorrow as well!

Still, I give you credit for even thinking of doing that! Somehow it reminded me of the time I caught my sisters and their seemingly feminine friend, who were in grade 9 or 10 at the time, laughing while seated around a Casio sampling keyboard. It seems that my sisters’ friend had farted into the sampling microphone and they used that to play some songs on the keyboard. Maybe that is the approach you should take if you re-record the song — I don’t think H. Bosch would have objected.

Wrong its clearly not real. Look at the heroin addict gouched out trying to steal the satellite dish. That’s clearly not accurate.
For a start Heroin wasn’t invented until much later and his hypodermic needle is much too big. The spoon is probably the right size but it would be much dirtier than that.

Get your facts right before you start blaming the internet!

I was more interested in the 600-year-old satellite dish in the center toward the bottom.

P.S. Your copyright notice at the bottom of this web page still says “2013.”

Umm, that’s not a satellite, it is most likely a shield. I can verify that the painting was indeed created when Amelia says it was, and of course the copyright at the bottom of the page says 2013, did you think the web existed back then?!?!? The copyright is on the webpage, not the image itself. Here is a link for the “Museo Nacional del Prado” (National Museum of Prado) that shows the painting and tells you about it: https://www.museodelprado.es/en/the-collection/online-gallery/on-line-gallery/obra/the-garden-of-earthly-delights/ Believe it or not, SOME things on the internet are true!
