Biography

Ray has been a member of the bar since 1979. He is the owner of Ray Beckerman, P.C., a New York City law firm. Ray is a commercial litigator who started his career with Phillips, Nizer, Benjamin, Krim and Ballon. His practice throughout the years has encompassed a broad variety of legal areas, including business, litigation, entertainment, and communications.

A member of the Information Technology Law Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, and of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, he has been active in representing consumers targeted by the RIAA for file sharing.

His blogging 'career' began in 2004 with Ohio Election Fraud (formerly "Fairness"), a blog devoted to evidence, litigation, and investigation of the 2004 Ohio presidential election. In August 2005 he started Recording Industry vs. The People, a blog devoted to collecting information about the RIAA's lawsuits against consumers.

Ray is a 1968 graduate of Herbert H. Lehman College, formerly Hunter College in the Bronx, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the college newspaper and majored in English Literature and the Classics. He graduated cum laude from St. John's University School of Law in 1978.

His legal career started with Phillips, Nizer, Benjamin, Krim & Ballon, where he clerked during law school and became an associate upon graduation, representing many entertainment, literary, and business clients. He moved on to plaintiff's class action firm Lowey Dannenberg & Knapp, and then to Squadron Ellenoff Plesent & Lehrer, where, among others, he represented print media in libel, privacy, and other communications areas. For 10 years he headed up his own practice, and then became a partner at Gallet Dreyer & Berkey LLP, Beldock Levine & Hoffman LLP, and Vandenberg & Feliu, before re-forming his own practice.
