Merry Christmas, Belated: Massive Layoffs Loom at MySpace...

This is one of those rumors you hope dies down, but doesn't.  Now, it looks like the real thing.  According to information published by the Wall Street Journal and other major outlets over the weekend, MySpace is getting ready for a sizable employee reduction.  That is, as much as 50 percent of a 1,100-strong workforce, largely US-based.

MySpace declined any comment to Digital Music News.   Meanwhile, Journal sources noted that MySpace is "still working out the details" of the drastic pare-down.  The changes are mostly being demanded by News Corp., and may also include a number of structural changes.  All of this comes on the heels of a recent shift towards entertainment, a symbolic handshake with Facebook, and an advertising renewal with Google.

But the rates on the Google deal were undoubtedly lower, and none of these shifts seem to be stemming massive traffic and revenue declines.  Maybe they need more time, or maybe the layoffs have simply been in motion for a while.
