The US-based recording industry suffered steep declines in 2007, according to information shared Thursday afternoon by Nielsen Soundscan. The tracking firm showed album sales declines of 15 percent, a thud that comes alongside British declines of 10 percent. Nielsen counted sales of 500.5 million albums during the year, a marked decline from year-2006 sales of 588.2 million.
Digital albums are included in the broader album tally, though their impact was modest. During the year, digital albums increased 53 percent to 50 million units, and internet-based physical album purchases notched upward 2.4 percent to 30.1 million.
On the brighter side, paid downloads moved upward 45 percent to 844.2 million, part of a continued gain. In terms of top sellers, Josh Groban grabbed first-place honors with album sales of 4.8 million, followed by Hannah Montana (3.9 million), The Eagles (3.6 million), and Carrie Underwood (3.2 million).
