Will funding get frothy in 2010? Perhaps wishful thinking, though the Echo Nest is starting the decade with a $1.31 million round. According to filings and information gleaned Tuesday, the university-bred music intelligence firm now has a total of 14 different investors.
The SEC filing does not disclose the specific investors, though sources to Digital Music News are pointing to a number of heavyweight backers. That includes Jim Pallotta, an overachieving hedge-funder and co-owner of the Boston Celtics; Nicholas Negroponte, founder of the MIT Media Lab and One Laptop per Child; and Don McLagan, formerly a top executive at Compete, NewsEdge, and Lotus.
Furthermore, Argos, Commonwealth and various angels remain on board. That includes Barry Vercoe (Media Lab cofounder and inventor of audio programming language Csound) and Steve Barrett (NASDAQ), according to those close to the round. A formal announcement is expected on Wednesday.
