National Football League (NFL) fans watched a pair of upsets on Sunday, part of an always-intense playoff process. And once the final two teams are ready for a face-off in Super Bowl XLII in early February, Pepsi and Amazon are expected to enter the picture with a massive pop-the-top promotion.
That has been bubbling for some time, though more details are emerging as the big game nears. According to the New York Times, Justin Timberlake is expected to jump-start the promotion, called "Pepsi Stuff". The Times also pointed to involvement of Mega, a Las Vegas-based marketing agency.
Perhaps most importantly, the promotion will involve MP3s from all major labels, thanks to recent DRM-free shifts by Warner Music Group and Sony BMG. Those licensing moves excluded Apple, a partner on previous Super Bowl tie-ins involving Pepsi. Whether the majors can tilt the balance with iTunes remains questionable, though an over-the-top Super Bowl promotion will undoubtedly boost the recently-launched Amazon MP3.
