Rock Band is sparking serious excitement among gamers, and
that means more revenue from add-on purchases. Of course, the action
starts with the purchase of the title, but the fun continues with extra
tracks. And according to MTV Games, over 2.5 million extra songs have
been sold since the game debuted in November. The company offers the
add-on tracks as either one-off or bundled purchases.
Rock Band is clearly winning converts at a record pace, though rival experience Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock remains the title to beat. Rock Band - available on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 consoles - has pulled revenues of more than $180 million, according to a recent NPD Group report. But the entire Guitar Hero series has raked revenues of $820 million in 2007 alone, according to the report, a single-year record for a gaming franchise. In terms of add-ons, Activision recently pointed Billboard to song download sales of 5 million on Hero III.
