Album Evolution? Apple Tablet Expected On the 27th...

Apple is now expected to deliver its tablet computer on January 27th, based on invitations mailed to key outlets and partners.  Sounds exciting, but what does this mean for the music industry?

Apple has already proven the power of touch-sensitive computing with the iPhone and iPod touch.  Both devices are almost entirely screen-based, and Apple clearly has the core technological concept under control.  If a tablet is indeed in the offing, then strong similarities will probably exist between the devices.

The action happens in San Francisco at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.  On the music side, a tablet offers a fresh venue for digital albums, and a chance to leap beyond audio-focused digital products.  Actually, a tablet-based album has been a source of speculation for months, though critical questions surround compatibility with simpler players like the iPhone and iPod.

That remains a concern on iTunes LP, launched in September of last year.  The format is loaded with extras, but proprietary in format and confined to iTunes 9.
