Macroeconomic pain is creating serious problems for music conferences, including a trio of mega-conferences this year. That includes CES in Las Vegas, and NAMM (National Association of Music Merchandisers) in San Diego. At the just-concluded Midem in Cannes, conference organizers pointed to an estimated attendance of 8,000, a drop of 12.1 percent from a year-ago total of 9,100.
That is substantial, though executives on-the-ground suspected something deeper. The reason is that the conference floor, hotel lobbies, and the streets of Cannes were obviously less crowded, especially compared to earlier throngs. "You would have hardly noticed a 10 percent drop," one executive observed. The event also cut the action by one day, ending on Wednesday.
Conference attendees pointed Digital Music News to broader macroeconomic concerns and inevitable declines, while highlighting the positives. Indeed, attendees pointed to some unexpected benefits of a slimmer draw. "I could get meetings with whomever I needed, just by walking up to the booth," one executive relayed during a Wednesday chit-chat at the Carlton. "We also got a table pretty easily here," the executive continued, though a quick check revealed sold-out rooms for Thursday night.
