eMusic Courts Classical Aficionados Once Again

eMusic, an early believer in MP3-based content, announced several  prestigious classical label additions on Wednesday.  The add-ons include Chandos Records, Telarc, and Harmonia Mundi, all recognizable names among classical aficionados.  That follows earlier agreements with classical labels Naive, Vox, Lyrita, Hungaraton, Supraphon, and CSO Resound, the label for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.  In total, eMusic carries a classical label roster of roughly 27,000.

The latest moves are relative no-brainers for eMusic, especially considering classical conversion percentages among its subscribers.  According to figures shared by the company, roughly one-half of eMusic subscribers that download a free classical sampler eventually download paid classical content from the site.

Those downloads are bundled within monthly subscription packages, though one-third of converted users are downloading classical content for the first time.  "Classical labels recognize that eMusic, with its sophisticated adult customer base and unsurpassed editorial features, sells classical music better than any other digital service," said eMusic president and chief executive David Pakman.
