Battle of the Playlists: Spotify Reveals a Cool 100 Million... (#midem)

Whose playlist total is bigger?  In the land of under-monetized on-demand music sites, this is as good a horse-race as any.  And, solidly in the lead is MySpace Music, which claimed a lofty 180 million total at Midem over the weekend.

But wait.  Spotify chief Daniel Ek subsequently shared a playlist total of 100 million, not bad for a site that hasn't even crossed the Atlantic.  But Ek went further, noting that 30 percent of playlists contain entire albums.  "Our users do listen to the album, they like that concept," Ek affirmed, bucking the typical thinking on album de-bundling.

In turn, playlists could be a 'gateway drug' towards paid subscriptions.  "Once they invest in building their library, the willingness to pay also increases," Ek relayed.  Part of the stickiness comes from playlist sharing, and the biggest referrals come from Facebook and Twitter.

That positions Spotify as a hub within a broader, pre-built social ecosystem.  "We're not Pandora, we're not Last.fm," Ek continued.  "We're trying to drive you... to use Spotify as the cloud-based service where you have your music library.  What Spotify is today, it's an application that you download and you get to play music, but what we're seeing is the early days of a platform as well."
