Post-Acquisition, Universal Easily Beats EMI Publishing Share

Universal Music Publishing Group officially grabbed honors as the largest music publisher in the world on Wednesday, thanks to a market share estimate published by Informa.  The shift puts EMI Music Publishing into an unfamiliar number two, though Universal purchased its way to the top.  In May of last year, European regulators approved the acquisition of BMG Music Publishing, a decision that boosted Universal's publishing market share from 11.9 percent to 24 percent overnight.

That outdistances EMI, which held steady at 17 percent last year.  Informa noted that Universal is likely to shed some points following EU-mandated divestitures - a list that includes compositions from the Zomba Music Group - though the first-place ranking will remain.

Elsewhere, independent publishers claimed roughly one-third of the market last year, according to Informa.  Universal Music Publishing Group, which purchased BMG Music Publishing for 1.63 billion euros ($2.42 billion at current exchange rates), is owned by Vivendi.
