Chips. Beer. Football! Super Bowl Sunday is virtually a national holiday in the US, and that offers huge opportunities for any artist lucky enough to be included.
So who are the bards of Super Bowl XLIV? The Who is grabbing the all-important halftime performance, and their setlist will be made available for play within Rock Band.
Carrie Underwood is singing the National Anthem. Underwood is the third-straight American Idol winner or finalist to play the opener, preceded by Jordin Sparks and Jennifer Hudson. Queen Latifah will sing "America the Beautiful".
Those are obviously some huge names, though commercials offer some wildcard opportunities. One example comes from Cheap Trick, who actually reworked an earlier song, "Dream Police," for an Audi ad. The updated version, "Green Police," will be used to support the Audi A3 TDI clean diesel. The funny spot can be viewed on Facebook here.
Outside of Audi, the biggest advertisers on tap are Doritos, Budweiser, Coca-Cola, Career Builder, and Godaddy, among others. Pepsi is a huge no-show this year thanks to a serious strategy shift, though Google is rumored to be preparing a third-quarter spot*.
Kick-off happens at 6:28 pm on CBS. More coverage ahead.
*Google did indeed post a commercial during the third-quarter, a search-driven narrative about a French romance that ends well.
