Independent retailer eMusic is now featuring unsigned artists on its destination, part of a newfound talent-scouting role. The MP3-based store, which offers millions of tracks from thousands of labels, has decided to complement its selection with hand-picked content of its own. The new offering, called eMusic Selects, will feature a pair of underexposed acts every month to an audience of roughly 400,000.
A&R - which stands for artists and reportoire - has always been a tricky science, especially given quickly-shifting tastes. But eMusic is aiming to develop and broaden newer musicians by applying the instincts of its expert staff. As part of the push, the artists will be required to offer eMusic a 60-day digital exclusive, and unearth previously-unreleased content.
