Location, Location, Location: Soundtrckr Enhances Geo-targeting...

The model for San Francisco-based Soundtrckr reads like a bundle of buzzwords, though the concept is fairly unique.  The 'geo-social' iPhone app allows users to create smart playlists on-the-fly, then share those streams within a 'location-aware social network'.

Essentially, users can build a smart playlist around a song, tag that playlist to their location, then share that playlist with anyone around the world.  The result, if it all works out, is an ad-hoc community of listeners, networking around music, Tweeting about their playlists and chatting within the app.

Soundtrckr is currently on the iPhone and iPod touch, though other platform apps are currently under development.  In Barcelona at Mobile World Congress, founder and CEO Daniele Calabrese is busy touting some application enhancements, particularly around smart playlist creation and better location-targeting.  The latest update allows playlist creation around any song within the seven-million-strong catalog, and users can now check the locations of other users anytime.

On top of that, Soundtrackr enables sharing through platforms like Twitter and Facebook to attract greater participation.  "Users wanted the opportunity to create stations beyond what was in their handset, and to see where their friends and listeners were around the country," Calabrese shared.  Funding rounds have come from Lumu Invest in Luxembourg, Romulus Capital in Boston, and various angels, according to the company.
