The Other Ten Billion: Twitter Crosses the Colossus...

Ten billion is a monstrously-large number, yet eleven-figures is becoming more commonplace in digital circles.  The iTunes Store scored its 10 billionth song download last month, and Twitter has now crossed the same threshold.  According to Twitter-tracker GigaTweet, the ten-billionth tweet happened late Thursday, though this is just an estimate - not an official count from Twitter itself.

Of course, tweets and song downloads are completely different animals, but both are incredibly important to musicians.  And, both Twitter and Apple are crossing these thresholds with greater rapidity.  Twitter flew past its five-billionth tweet just four months ago, and GigaTweet estimated that tweet number 20 billion will happen in under 200 days.  In similar fashion, Apple announced its 6 billionth download at the beginning of 2009.

Yet the path is harder to project for the iTunes Store.  These are heady gains indeed, though the broader sentiment is that paid downloads are headed towards a plateau.
