So, what exactly does the survey say? NPD Group recently reported that peer-to-peer music swapping is falling. But Harris Interactive (and its Harris Poll) is saying something entirely different. In its latest March results, just now emerging, Harris noted that music-specific sharing across BitTorrent, LimeWire, and the Pirate Bay has held steady since November of 2008.
Acquisition of other media types - including movies, television shows, and games - are increasing, according to the group. Harris has been querying groups of roughly 2,000 over regular monthly intervals.
On the music side, Harris reports that in the current month, 18 percent of respondents 'download music from sites like BitTorrent, LimeWire, or The Pirate Bay, etc.,' exactly the percentage from November of 2008. Additionally, an increased number - 13 percent - 'download music from sites like Rapidshare, Megaupload, Netload, or Filefactory, etc.,' up from 11 percent in November of 2008.
On trends related to offline swapping of physical hard drives, Harris is aligned with recent NPD findings. Harris reports that 20 percent of respondents swap music via USB sticks or portable hard drives, up from 18 percent in November of 2008.
(Update: Harris subsequently confirmed and expanded upon this data in New York.)
