Labels have been suffering executive 'brain drain' for years, though the effect is difficult to quantify. But what about 'band drain,' the decision by desirable groups to ditch a label, often for a label-free existence?
According to details first tipped by Bob Lefsetz, OK Go has decided to sever its ties with EMI Music. EMI subsequently confirmed the 'mutual agreement' to divorce in a statement. "They will take on all distribution and promotion functions for their latest album, Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky, which was released in January," the statement continued.
The breakup follows a decision by EMI to prevent embeds on OK Go's wildly-popular YouTube videos. That was partially solved by a recent sponsorship by State Farm on "This Too Shall Pass," though the band ultimately felt alienated and cramped by the move.
But this is just one part of a much larger problem for EMI. According to details emerging from Bloomberg, both Pink Floyd and Queen are discussing their own divorces with the label group. Pink Floyd is currently suing EMI over a number of digital disagreements.
