Hot Topic slumped during the recent quarter, thanks largely to softer retail sales and a lackluster performance from it online music unit. That includes a glut of merchandise tied to the movie Twilight, part of a selection that also includes plenty of teenage-focused (12-22) music merchandise.
Additionally, losses at music-focused community, merch and MP3 site ShockHound dampened the report. Overall, Hot Topic profits dropped 14.4 percent to $8 million for the 13-week period ending January 30th (fiscal fourth quarter). Revenues landed at $214 million for the period, down from $238 million from the same period last year.
Wall Street reacted to the softer report - as well as softer guidance - by dropping Hot Topic (HOTT) shares 4.58 percent to $6.25.
