As the winds of SXSW die down, Austin is now returning to its more normal state of weirdness. "We're just not used to all of these people," one Austinite told Digital Music News. "But I hope you like our little town," the local continued, emitting a bit of folksiness that somehow made sense in a major city.
Austin is known for its great local music scene, though this festival was a magnet for artists worldwide. Dublin to Denver, Mexico to Minneapolis, this was an event stuffed with nearly 2,000 acts, and tens of thousands of attendees - whether badge holders, wristband wearers, or simply on-the-cheap bar-hoppers. But off the pavement, a separate pulse was happening on Twitter, arguably the most important communication channel during event.
And the biggest band on Twitter? Over a four-day period, Digital Music News trolled through several thousand Twitter posts tied to South-by-Southwest, monitoring the endless buzz and chatter. Overall, Metallica, a late-stage surprise at Stubb's on Friday night, grabbed the most mentions. Over a canvass of more than 8,512 tweets tagged #sxsw, Metallica garnered an impressive 319 mentions, followed by a healthy 158 for Devo. Both have roots in an earlier era, and seemed a bit out-of-element for SXSW, though crowds packed both performances.
Who else? Another superstar appearance was offered by Kanye West, who grabbed 102 mentions. Close behind was a mix of personality and band. The Hold Steady ranked closely behind Kanye, signaling serious groundswell, followed by Black Lips, Silversun Pickups, Dinosaur Jr., and heavily-watched keynoter Quincy Jones.
SXSW may be fueled by aspiring bands, but established names still got the most attention. Heard of Tinted Windows? The 'supergroup' is comprised of ex-Hanson member Taylor Hanson, ex-Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha, and members of Cheap Trick and Fountains of Wayne. That ensemble was enough to garner serious Twitter energy - the ninth-highest over the four-day period.
And tenth? That would be Rachael Ray, food extraordinaire and host of a showcase at Maggie Mae's that included the Hold Steady, the Airborne Toxic Event, and others.
And the rest? After those top-ten elite, the Twittering masses couldn't stop tweeting about Superdrag, Perez Hilton, M Ward, Peter Bjorn and John, Glasvegas, PJ Harvey, The Decemberists, New York Dolls, Tori Amos, The Pains of Being Broke at Heart, Vivian Girls, Grizzly Bear, and Jane's Addiction, just some of the top-ranked names.
Stay tuned for more SXSW recapping. Special thanks to Fontana Distribution vice president of Marketing & Label Relations Bryan Mead for suggesting the Twitter survey.
