Looks like the label deal is still the prize for most artists. Just recently, ReverbNation queried nearly 2,000 unsigned artists on whether they ultimately wanted to get signed, and a whopping 75.4 percent said 'yes.' The survey was a joint effort with Digital Music News.

Why this would be shocking to anyone reveals the utter naivete that abounds in the blogosphere. Is it that hard to understand why someone would want someone else to invest money, expertise, and manpower resources into their creation? DMN writes about this desire/need WEEKLY whereas it concerns digital business startups. Same concept for unsigned artists...

These bands need to be educated. Music isn't monetized by selling records anymore, those days have long passed. The album is a biproduct of the brand, a component. Bands need a great manager who is willing to push their music for licensing opportunities and brand partnerships. Bands below the mid line can't even consider this either, they will get to that point by relentlessly playing shows. Phoenix has been doing it for ten years and 6 albums, and they JUST now blew up. You will know when the time is right.

musicbusexec Tuesday, March 29, 2011
Most of new artists are looking for a label because:
a) they do not have the resources ($$$)
b) they dont like to pay for services (=know how)
c) they are lazy !!!
Artist believe in fairy tales instead of hard work, they are waiting for someone else to do the work and invest $$$

In my opinion, I don't really think is the deal that most musicians are after, but the money that yesteryear labels would cough out to make this recordings.

... Well one way of thinking is, that Any artist, if they are even halfway good, will have fans. So if you have a huge marketing / promotion machine behind you, the exposure will sell downloads, tickets and t shirts..... and it'll be a helluva ride in the process! ;)

John Wednesday, March 30, 2011
With the amount of hours I end up doing administrative work instead of creating music I would gladly turn that part of the job over to a label and give them an appropriate cut of the revenue.
I work nine to five Monday Through Friday at my day job, and then five to midnight on administrative/accounting/legal/design work almost every day.
At this point it is getting hard to squeeze in the time to make the art, and that was the point of this whole thing in the beginning.

@jacksontalent Wednesday, March 30, 2011

Wow... indie artists still want to get signed to the majors... interesting.

Jamikeken Wednesday, March 30, 2011
Artists want to get signed because they don't have the resources to gain massive success. It doesn't matter that fewer people are buying music, record labels don't just sell records. They can help an artist to make flashy music videos, go on international tours, and receive international airplay on radio stations around the world. An independent artist can't do all that unless their daddy is a billionaire. I mean really, how could someone in Ohio, working an average 9-5 job, set up a tour across Europe? Tell me. Also, as an indie artist/college student myself I barely have time or the money to make songs yet alone market them, and I definitely don't have the funds to go touring.

what about country artists?? and what about the idea that these indie artists desire an INDIE label record deal? what about indie bands starting their own "label"/imprint & just focus on hiring the right team & especially on getting an amazing Distribution deal. That's where DIY gets especially difficult, you can only distribute material to so many places on your own.

Major Friday, April 01, 2011
Why am I not surprised, granted what some of you guys are saying is true. However the problem is that most artists don't want to work, they don't want to put in hours of there time to get themselves to succeed. They want someone to hand success to them, they want someone to give, give, give. I'm not a fan of that never will be. If I really wanted it I would work for it, if the deal come then it come but if not I'm still going to work on being successful without the deal.
Lets look at the reason why artists would even want the deal, lets see MONEY and uh FAME sounds about right, thats all.
I wouldn't want a fan base of 50 million people and not all 50 million of them buy music, I rather have 1000 fans who will buy because they know who I am as an artist and person.
Yeah I got music on iTunes and all these other stores, what I do with that money I make from them it goes back into the music to put more music on those stores.

This is a bit surprising. Apparently record deals are still attractive to many.

SAN Monday, April 04, 2011
After reading everybodies throughts My dime would be that the industry sucks the monopolization of our air waves and not to mention the digital waves. U hear the same 10 songs over and over all day, the dj's have no spine and the artist have no power.
U have only 4 majors all the others are a part of one of the 4 so be prepared to conform yr style or die. Major digital dist. is not easy to come by try gettin yr sh#t on itunes or pandora in a spot that counts LOL.....GOOD LUCK
I agree with U= all. The days of an artist gettin a big fact check and ridin off in some bucket sittin on 24s is over, look at the nfl and the nba next. Nobodies payin because for every 1 artist you have at least 50000 worldwide willin to take scraps and compromise. Fam it's just not enough star slots, enjoy what U do, be creative and original maybe we can start to turn things, till then strap on boots on.

Being someone who supports music, I think getting signed is something artists want. It is a great way to get their name out on a wider scope and sometimes the only way they can get their music played on the radio. I've seen a thousand local bands that are better than 99% of the music played on the radio, yet they will never make it big because they do not either A. have the resources to make it happen, or B. do not know the right people to get heard. Sadly, the music industry isn't about being what you know, it's all about who you know still. I still buy CDs for all local artists trying to make it who I like, and I buy CDs for the artists that I absolutely love. Some artists get my support by me shelling out a ton of cash to see them live and spending upwards of 35 dollars on a Tshirt. If I drop that kind of cash on the merchandise that goes directly to them, I honestly don't feel bad downloading a CD that will go directly to the record company with only a small portion going to the actual band. Think about it.
