Teaser MP3s are nothing new, and fans love a free sample ahead of a broader release. But in a twist, Dave Matthews Band is now showing its Twitter-savvy by releasing a gratis MP3 through the micro-blogging platform. The track, "Funny The Way It Is," is available for one week before hitting paid channels. "Why don't we start the day off with a little bit of new music," Dave suggested Tuesday on his account, @davejmatthews, population 416,878.
The track is part of the upcoming album, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, officially slated for delivery on June 2nd. The tweet itself links to a page on label RCA Records (rcarecords.com/dmbfreedownload), where fans are required to register for the download. That process includes a mandatory mailing list sign-up, though the site advises that fans can later unsubscribe.
So, what next? Twittering artists have the ability to speak directly to a group of fans, and Matthews is a seriously active participant in that process. Others have also been teasing content through Twitter, though the DMB development could spark similar moves from bigger-name artists.
