American Idol Rating Descent Causes Concern...

In a fragmented, distracted media landscape, a success story like American Idol represents a remarkable achievement.  In a previous era, television faced far less competition from the internet, gaming consoles, DVDs, and other entertainment choices.  In the current setting, boring is simply not an option for most consumers.

And perhaps inevitably, the sheen surrounding American Idol is starting to show signs of wear.  Idol audiences are down 7 percent from last season to 29.2 million viewers, still an enviable total for any program.  But digging deeper into Nielsen Media Research figures, Los Angeles Times reporter Scott Collins pointed to heavier attrition within the female 18-34 and kid 2-11 demographics.  "That's a bad sign, because children and young adults are generally the first to bail on a show that's getting crow's feet," Collins asserted.

Looking ahead, Idol will mostly likely continue its steady descent, a trajectory that is not unique for hit shows.  But the bigger story for television is also one of decline, a trend that is happening with or without phenomena like American Idol.
