MSN Music: The DRM Aftertaste Really Lasts...

At the tail end of 2006, Microsoft shifted from PlaysForSure to a closed, Zune-focused ecosystem.  Instead of a broader protection system for many devices and many stores, the software giant refocused its attention to a more insular approach that resembled iPod+iTunes.

That alienated a range of participating hardware and software companies that had committed themselves to PlaysForSure.   Ahead of the move, Napster publicly complained about the buggy PlaysForSure system, though the Microsoft shift ensured that less attention and support would be given to the already-problematic interoperability system.

Consumers are also feeling the pain.  Alongside the relative abandonment away from PlaysForSure, Microsoft also pulled the plug on the ecommerce component of MSN Music, shifting buy links to the Zune Marketplace.  And for those buying music on MSN Music prior to that November transition, the incompatibility headaches are just beginning.

In a letter to users, Microsoft noted that after August 31st, songs  purchased on MSN Music could not be transferred to additional computers and devices, as additional usage licenses would not be granted.  "License keys already obtained as of August 31, 2008 will continue to allow you to listen to songs on all the computers that you previously authorized for service," Microsoft described.
