American Idol Ratings Continue to Ease; Low Point Emerges

American Idol ratings slipped to a five-year low on Wednesday, at least within the 18-49 demographic.  That is part of a broader and expected slide, one that invariably affects dominant shows like Idol.

But despite the downward trend, the overall numbers remain sizable in absolute terms.  Wednesday's show scored 22.6 million viewers, down from a 23.3 million total last week, according to Nielsen Media Research.  On average, the show is 7 percent below ratings last year, and stronger dips are appearing within the critical female 18-34 and child demographics.
