Rival majors - particularly Warner Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment - have been actively considering EMI bids, according to sources. Warner Music chief Edgar Bronfman has been mum on the subject, though Sony Music head Rolf Schmidt-Holz recently told a German newspaper that EMI remains a serious possibility.
Woops. Now, Sony is backpedaling, and claiming that the Schmidt-Holz comments on EMI were part of a broader, more general statement. A Dow Jones 'source' noted that the comments 'may have been misinterpreted to mean that the company was specifically considering a bid for EMI,' even though Schmidt-Holz specifically called out 'EMI' in the interview.
Sony is no stranger to misinformation. In the past, the company has gone on the counter-offensive against Digital Music News on similarly-flimsy grounds. Stay tuned for more developments.
