Attendance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival dropped by roughly 30,000 this year, according to figures surfacing Monday. AEG-controlled Goldenvoice pointed to a tally of 270,000 in a discussion with Palm Springs-based Desert Sun, a local paper.
The reduced audience could be attributable to a cooling economy, soaring gas prices, and shrinking disposable cash. The out-of-the-way festival is also a scorcher, potentially an added reason for potential concertgoers to beat the heat indoors. Other factors may also be in play, though the last-minute addition of Prince failed to boost attendance levels past previous totals.
