The Usher Leak: Download Estimates Emerge...

Usher's latest is leaking, and fresh figures reveal substantial piracy volumes.  On Friday, the total number of pre-release album downloads crossed half-a-million, according to data shared with Digital Music News.  The album, Here I Stand, is now hitting retailers on both sides of the Atlantic.

On Friday, Digital Music News pointed to multiple, full-album download listings on mininova.org, the largest BitTorrent tracker.  The first listing appeared on May 20th, one full week ahead of the scheduled street date in the United States.

Over the weekend, media tracking firm BigChampagne confirmed that the complete album first appeared on the internet on that date.  The company also pointed to leaked tracks dating back to March, though the most of the pre-release album downloads have happened during the past week.  On Friday, the firm had tracked a total of 554,716 album downloads - across various configurations and track listings - on BitTorrent alone.

On the earlier leaks, producer Polow da Don confirmed to MTV News in February that he was responsible for leaking at least one track.  But the producer explained that the single, "Love In This Club," went on to receive considerable attention, solid radio play, and strong chart positioning.  "Radio stations were getting it off the internet and playing it," Polow da Don explained.

In retrospect, that makes the earlier leak a well-calculated move, though the source of the entire, finished album leak last week remains unclear.
