Virgin Media is now sending anti-piracy letters to its broadband customers, a collaborative effort involving the UK-based BPI. The initiative does not include enforcement or filtering aspects, according to details shared by the label trade group on Friday. Instead, the plan involves the delivery of "informative letters" to suspected file-sharers, one from Virgin, and the other from the BPI.
The BPI acknowledged that a significant number of subscribers are unaware that infringing activity is happening on their accounts. The letters will attempt to educate users on the dangers of file-sharing, including the often-overblown threat of contracting viruses and malware. The letters will also include links to paid platforms.
On its face, the effort represents an education-focused campaign, though subscribers are unlikely to interpret the reminders as a friendly gesture. Meanwhile, label organizations like the BPI are pushing a broader agenda that includes policing of subscriber lines, something that ISPs have traditionally resisted.
